Overview - ERIC Emergency Messaging System
ERIC (Emergent Reply Imminent Crisis) is a safety app that monitors users through time-based check-in events. When users fail to acknowledge these safety events, ERIC automatically sends SMS notifications to their designated emergency contacts.
Message Types:
- Emergency Alerts: Sent to emergency contacts when a user misses a safety check-in
- System Notifications: Account verification, security alerts to app users
- Confirmation Messages: Opt-in confirmations and opt-out acknowledgments
Emergency Contact SMS Opt-In Workflow
This section documents how emergency contacts provide express written consent to receive SMS messages from ERIC.
Step 1: User Initiates Emergency Contact Addition
When a ERIC app user wants to add someone as an emergency contact:
- User opens ERIC app and navigates to "Emergency Contacts"
- User enters contact's name, relationship, and email address
- User clicks "Send Invitation" to invite the emergency contact
Step 2: Emergency Contact Receives Invitation
The potential emergency contact receives an email invitation containing:
Step 3: Consent Collection Page
When the emergency contact clicks the invitation link, they're directed to a dedicated consent page featuring:
Step 4: Phone Number Verification
After providing consent, the emergency contact immediately receives an SMS verification:
Step 5: Emergency Contact Activation
Once the emergency contact verifies their phone number:
- Their SMS consent is recorded with timestamp
- They're activated in the ERIC system
- They receive a final confirmation message
- The primary user is notified their emergency contact is active
